Rapid City Regional Hospital's Respiratory Care team provides
testing and treatment for people with lung diseases such as
emphysema and asthma. We also provide ventilation for people
who can't breathe on their own. These may include trauma patients,
children, or newborns that need help breathing. In addition to our
work with those with breathing problems, the Respiratory Care
Department manages a smoking cessation program.

A Wide Range of Care
Our wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic programs are structured
for both inpatient and outpatient service. These include adult and
infant ventilator care, bronchodilator therapy, chest physiotherapy,
pre-and post-surgical respiratory care and oxygen therapy. Diagnostic
services include pulmonary function testing, indirect calorimetry,
arterial blood gas sampling and analysis, pulmonary exercise testing
and pulse oximetry. Other services provided by our staff include
bronchopulmonary drainage, exercise therapy, medication administration,
airway maintenance and respiratory home care arrangements.
Participation in Patient Care
Under the guidance of five Board Certified Pulmonologists, licensed
respiratory therapists working in Rapid City Regional Hospital's
Respiratory Care Department have an ever-expanding role in influencing
and providing patient care. Staff therapists participate in the
decision-making processes through the Respiratory Care Council as well
as therapist driven protocols. Cooperation with other health care
professionals takes place on a daily basis, along with participation
in activities to promote community efforts to meet the health needs
of the public.
