A standard Ultrasound is a simple procedure and most exams take around 30
minutes. A gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined to
maximize contact between the transducer and the skin. The transducer is then
moved over the targeted area. Depending on the exam, you may have to lie
motionless, change positions, or hold your breath. Once the exam is
complete, the gel is washed off.
For certain types of Ultrasound exams, smaller, specially designed
transducers may be inserted into the vagina or rectum. If these exams
require special preparation, such as eating or drinking instructions,
you will be told prior to the exam.
Rapid results are essential not only for your peace-of-mind, but also for
your physician to begin planning any necessary treatment. Experienced
radiologists will read the scans and forward the results to your
physician usually by the next business day.
