Ultrasound

An Ultrasound procedure is a safe, generally non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. A small microphone-like device called a transducer emits sound waves through the skin. These sound waves echo off of the different tissues of the body and they are reflected back to the transducer. The echoes are converted into electrical signals and displayed on a monitor.

Ultrasound
When It Is Used

Ultrasound is considered the "Gold Standard" diagnostic exam for monitoring the growth of a developing fetus. It is also used to help diagnose complicated medical conditions such as blood clotting disorders, cancer, and heart disease.

Safety

Ultrasound is very safe. Since its introduction as a diagnostic tool in the 1950s, there have been no related adverse effects to patients.

What to Expect

A standard Ultrasound is a simple procedure and most exams take around 30 minutes. A gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined to maximize contact between the transducer and the skin. The transducer is then moved over the targeted area. Depending on the exam, you may have to lie motionless, change positions, or hold your breath. Once the exam is complete, the gel is washed off.

For certain types of Ultrasound exams, smaller, specially designed transducers may be inserted into the vagina or rectum. If these exams require special preparation, such as eating or drinking instructions, you will be told prior to the exam.

Rapid results are essential not only for your peace-of-mind, but also for your physician to begin planning any necessary treatment. Experienced radiologists will read the scans and forward the results to your physician usually by the next business day.
