Transesohageal Echocardiogram

What is a Transesohageal Echocardiogram (TEE)?
This test is used to examine the heart through the wall of the esophagus. The esophagus
carries food to the stomach. A tube, passed down the esophagus, uses sound waves to take
pictures of your heart.
During the exam, pictures of your heart are shown on a small television screen. The doctor
is able to view the pictures and determine the condition of your heart. After the test, the
doctor will discuss the results with you.
Why is the test done?
- To examine the heart chambers
- To check for blood clots in the heart chambers
- To evaluate the heart valves
How do I prepare for this test?
- Wear a two-piece, loose-fitting clothing.
- Make plans for someone to drive you home following the test.
- Do not eat or drink anything for eight (8) hours before the test.
- If you are taking heart medications, check with your doctor. He
or she may ask you to delay certain medications until after the test.
How long will it take to complete the test?
The complete procedure takes about two (2) hours. The probe is in your esophagus for about 10 to 20 minutes.
What can I expect during the test?
- You will be asked to read and sign a consent form.
- You will need to undress from the waist up, and you will be given a gown to wear.
- An intravenous (IV) line is inserted into a vein in your arm.
- Blood pressure, heart rhythm, and oxygen levels are monitored.
- Oxygen may be given through a cannula, or nasal tube.
- Dentures or bridges will be removed. Please tell your doctor or nurse of any loose or broken teeth.
- The back of your throat will be numbed with a spray and a gel.
- Sedating medicine is put into the IV line to make you feel drowsy and relaxed.
- The doctor will assist you in “swallowing” the tube.
Is the test painful?
The tube you swallow is no large than a bite of food. You might experience some discomfort
as you swallow the tube. Once the tube is in your esophagus, however, you will feel little
discomfort. The tube is gently removed when the test is completed.
What happens after the test?
- You are observed until you become awake and alert.
- Once awake, the IV and other monitoring equipment are removed.
- You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for two (2)
hours after the test.
- More instructions will be reviewed with you before you leave.
Remember, you must have someone drive you home after the test.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this procedure, please ask your doctor or health care professional.
