MEASURING YOUR FLUID INTAKE

Sometimes your body needs extra help to prevent fluid weight gain. One way to do this is through fluid limitations. Limiting the amount of fluid you take in (intake) can help prevent excess fluid from collecting in your lungs, feet, ankles and abdomen. You can better manager your heart failure and live a more comfortable life.

We suggest limiting fluids to 2,000 ml or 2 quarts per day.

To control your fluid intake, you will need to measure your fluids. This can be done by using milliliters, (ml) or their household measure equivalents. Most liquids show the number of milliliters and ounces on the bottle or can. The table below will help you measure your fluids.

1 tablespoon    =    15 ml
2 tablespoons    =    30 ml or 1 fluid ounce
2 ounces (1/4 cup)    =    60 ml
4 ounces (1/2 cup)    =    120 ml
6 ounces (3/4 cup)    =    180 ml
8 ounces (1 cup)    =    240 ml
16 ounces (2 cups or 1 pint)    =    about 500 ml
21 ounces (4 cups or 1 quart)    =    about 1000 ml

There are three main sources of fluids that you need to measure. Count them as part of your fluid intake.

1. Fluids that pour, such as milk, coffee, tea, carbonated beverages, water, etc.

2. Solids that are liquid at room temperature, such as gelatin, ice cream, frozen yogurt, popsicles, sherbet, ice, etc.

3. Fluids in cooked foods, such as the juice of undrained canned fruits and vegetables, and the liquid in soup.
