The monitor records your heart rhythm for one to two days. You will need to
keep a diary while you wear the monitor. The diary provides your doctor with
important information to interpret the test.
Why is the test done?
Your doctor uses the Holter monitor to evaluate the effects of work, rest and play
on your heart.
How do I prepare for this test?
No special preparation is required for this test.
How long with the set-up take?
The set-up takes about 30 minutes.
How long will I have to wear it?
Your doctor will determine what length of time you wear the monitor.
What can I expect during the test?
You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up.
Small, sticky pads, or electrodes, are put on your chest to record
the heart’s rhythm.
Wires are fastened onto the pads, and tape is used to secure
the wires to your chest.
Chest hair may be shaved.
You will need to keep a diary while you wear the monitor. Write down
any unusual feelings such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness
or heart pounding. Record the time it occurred and the activity you were doing.
Do not bathe or shower while wearing the monitor. You can take a sponge
bath, but do not get the monitor wet.
What do I do with the Holter monitor when finished with the test?
The monitor needs to be returned to the same location where you received it as soon as the test is completed.
