Lab & Imaging

Various types of laboratory tests and imaging techniques are used during and after cancer treatment to monitor tumor response to treatment and to watch for potential side effects. Imaging tests your doctor could order might include x-rays, MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging), CT scans (computerized tomography, often called a "Cat" scan), nuclear medicine tests, ultrasounds or mammograms. Laboratory tests could include tumor markers, organ function monitors or blood counts.

For your convenience, laboratory and general imaging services are provided on-site at Rapid City Regional Hospital's Cancer Care Institute. The Hospital's Radiology Department provides less routine imaging services. If you prefer to have your tests performed elsewhere, please let your doctor or nurse know; it's important that the tests are scheduled in time for results to be available before your appointment at the Cancer Care Institute.

A dated physician order is required for all laboratory and imaging tests. Tests not related to cancer treatment that are ordered by outside physicians are generally not done at the Cancer Care Institute unless they can be combined with tests ordered by Cancer Care Institute physicians. When in doubt, please ask.
